Sweeney Todd-The Demon Barber From Fleet Street-2007

Published by rosey3223 under movie reviews Edit This

                                                              Sweeney and the sailor

Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp) is on a ship going home to England after many years of being away. He befriends a young sailor named Anthony (Jamie Campbell Bower) and tells the young sailor of a barber named Benjamin Barker who had a beautiful wife and daughter and how an evil man lusted after his wife and had Benjamin thrown out of England.

As Sweeney Todd steps onto England’s land, his first stop is in a bakery owned by Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), who offers him an awful tasting pie…and knows it too! He inquires about the room upstairs and she takes him. While upstairs he asks about the previous tenants and she tells him of a barber who had a beautiful wife and daughter Sweeney and Mrs. Lovettand how an evil man lusted after the beautiful wife and had the man thrown out of England. She then tells him of how the evil man, named Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), took the beautiful wife back to his home and raped her. She then took poison and the Judge took over the care of her beautiful daughter and made her his ward. After telling Sweeney this story, she finds out that he is in fact Benjamin Barker.

Sweeney vows that he will have his revenge and kill the Judge, but how is the tricky part. In the meantime, the young sailor Anthony, sees a beautiful young woman sitting in the window and instantly falls in love. Unknown to him, she is the ward of the Judge Turpin who catches the young man staring up at her, threatens Anthony, and tells him to never come back. So the now in love Anthony needs to find out how to help his beloved escape from this evil man. Now both men need to find a way to undo the damage that was caused by Judge Turpin.

Sweeney about to do his deedI really enjoyed this movie, but I was also very disappointed in the fact that it was a musical. I was not aware of that when buying it, and I felt that it really wasn’t necessary (sorry, but I’m not a fan of musicals). But doing a little research I also found out that this is a remake and originally was a musical, so I’ve accepted that issue of mine. But fair warning to those that have not seen it…it’s a musical!

To be quite honest, this movie has stuck with me. I love how it is such a dark film, but that is also the style of Tim Burton who did a wonderful job on this film. I love that it is dark, and not just because it is such a dark story, but it really captures the “dark” qualities of it. When telling the side of Benjamin’s story, it was bright and sunny and you could feel how happy he and his wife truly were. And when telling Sweeney’s side, you could feel his anger and emptiness that he had from the loss of his beloveds.

Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett in townI also enjoyed the arrangement that Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett come up with to not only take on his revenge, but to make her pies taste wonderful and get her business back up and running. However, I was able to predict the ending, which I try very hard not to do, but it was a very easy thing to accomplish. But then when you think about it, it really wasn’t a mystery and being that it was such a dark film, you kind of already knew what was going to happen. Does that mean you shouldn’t see it? Heck no! I say you should…epsecially if you are a Depp/Burton fan!!

Fool’s Gold-2008

Published by rosey3223 under movie reviews Edit This

Ben (Mathew McConaughey) and Tess (Kate Hudson) just got a divorce. But the day before the divorce was finalized, Ben found a clue to a treasure they had been searching for for 8 years. Sadly, he also manages to sink his boat and that’s how he found the clue, when the boat hit the bottom of the ocean. Ben tries to tell Tess, but she figures that he is lying until she visits a web page with the clue that Ben found being right there.

So without a boat or money, Ben and Tess (separately) have an idea to go to Tess’ boss Nigel (Donald Sutherland), who is a billionaire with nothing better to do with his time or money. He agrees and gets his bored daughter Gemma to join in on the fun. On their hunt for the treasure, the Queen’s Dowry, they run into many obstacles, old friends, and new enemies. Is the hunt worth it? You’ll have to watch that for yourself.

—————————–

First, I’m glad to see Kate and Mathew back together again! The chemistry that these two have is so wonderful to see that it almost makes me hope that they do eventually get together in their movies. Personally, I think they would make such a wonderful match off screen as well…but that’s not up to me. As far as the movie goes, it is funny, beautiful, and makes me want to go treasure hunting. I even enjoyed seeing Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who played “Theo” on “The Cosby Show”…haven’t seen him in a while on screen.

The only thing I didn’t like about the movie would be the accents. Maybe it’s because they seemed fake to me, or maybe it’s because I know that Donald doesn’t have an English accent and Malcolm doesn’t have a Jamaican one. All I know, is that they could have been better.

All in all, it was a delightful movie and I look forward to seeing it again!

The Bucket List

Published by rosey3223 under movie reviews Edit This

The Bucket List is about a couple of ederly men, Edward (Jack Nicholson) and Carter (Morgan Freeman) who meet each other in the hospital. They share the same room for about a month when they both find out that they have 6 months to a year to live. After surgeries, chemo-therapy, and many experiments, Carter starts a list called the bucket list…things you want to do before you kick the bucket.

As they set off on their journey of life, they go skydiving, have a race with each other with a Shelby Mustang and a Challenger RT., and travel the world. But then life catches up to them and they have to face reality.

This movie is such a great movie because not only does it have a good plot, but it also has meaning to it. The meaning that I understood was to live life to the fullest because life is so fast that before you know it, it’s time to kick the bucket. I think that Nicholson and Freeman were such a good team in this movie and balanced each other out so well as Nicholson played the spunky wisenheimer while Freeman was the laid back logical thinker of the two.

Although it was a tear jerker, it’s also one that makes you think and appreciate life. I would definitely recommend this movie!!

Rambo-2008

Published by rosey3223 under movie reviews Edit This

cover of movie

This is the fourth, and probably the last of the Rambo series starring Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo. John is now in Thailand and meets a group of missionaries who are on their way to a town only accessible by boat…which John owns a boat and is the only one who knows the way, but he refuses to take them and tells them Sarah and Johnthat they cannot help. Not understanding why John says that, Sarah (Julie Benz) pushes the matter further and John finally agrees.

After they get to their destination, all seems well and peaceful when all of a sudden there is shooting and people running for their lives. A military unit is taking over the town and kills anyone who gets in the way of their gun. When all is said and done, they take the remaining survivors and do unmentionable things to them. Because no word is heard from the missionaries, mercenaries are sent to check out it out. Needing John and his boat again, they set off to find out what happened and almost get killed themselves until John steps in.

I wasn’t all that interested in seeing this movie as I’m not a huge Rambo fan, but after watching a copy of a friend’s, it turns out that it was actually pretty good. What I find interesting, is that Stallone not only wrote the screenplay, but also directed it and starred in it…that takes not only a master in multi-tasking, but talent as well!! It did get rather graphic with all of the killings, but toJohn pointing arrow me I think it was worth it because it gives you an idea of what the people went through! I think my favorite part of the movie is when John gets on the “mega” gun that’s on the back of one of the enemy’s military trucks and just starts blasting the bad guys away.

As I said before, it really surprised me at how good it was. Would I recommend it? If you are in the mood for a good ass whoopin’, then ya, go and see it
