                                                              Sweeney and the sailor

Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp) is on a ship going home to England after many years of being away. He befriends a young sailor named Anthony (Jamie Campbell Bower) and tells the young sailor of a barber named Benjamin Barker who had a beautiful wife and daughter and how an evil man lusted after his wife and had Benjamin thrown out of England.

As Sweeney Todd steps onto England’s land, his first stop is in a bakery owned by Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), who offers him an awful tasting pie…and knows it too! He inquires about the room upstairs and she takes him. While upstairs he asks about the previous tenants and she tells him of a barber who had a beautiful wife and daughter Sweeney and Mrs. Lovettand how an evil man lusted after the beautiful wife and had the man thrown out of England. She then tells him of how the evil man, named Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), took the beautiful wife back to his home and raped her. She then took poison and the Judge took over the care of her beautiful daughter and made her his ward. After telling Sweeney this story, she finds out that he is in fact Benjamin Barker.

Sweeney vows that he will have his revenge and kill the Judge, but how is the tricky part. In the meantime, the young sailor Anthony, sees a beautiful young woman sitting in the window and instantly falls in love. Unknown to him, she is the ward of the Judge Turpin who catches the young man staring up at her, threatens Anthony, and tells him to never come back. So the now in love Anthony needs to find out how to help his beloved escape from this evil man. Now both men need to find a way to undo the damage that was caused by Judge Turpin.

Sweeney about to do his deedI really enjoyed this movie, but I was also very disappointed in the fact that it was a musical. I was not aware of that when buying it, and I felt that it really wasn’t necessary (sorry, but I’m not a fan of musicals). But doing a little research I also found out that this is a remake and originally was a musical, so I’ve accepted that issue of mine. But fair warning to those that have not seen it…it’s a musical!

To be quite honest, this movie has stuck with me. I love how it is such a dark film, but that is also the style of Tim Burton who did a wonderful job on this film. I love that it is dark, and not just because it is such a dark story, but it really captures the “dark” qualities of it. When telling the side of Benjamin’s story, it was bright and sunny and you could feel how happy he and his wife truly were. And when telling Sweeney’s side, you could feel his anger and emptiness that he had from the loss of his beloveds.

Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett in townI also enjoyed the arrangement that Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett come up with to not only take on his revenge, but to make her pies taste wonderful and get her business back up and running. However, I was able to predict the ending, which I try very hard not to do, but it was a very easy thing to accomplish. But then when you think about it, it really wasn’t a mystery and being that it was such a dark film, you kind of already knew what was going to happen. Does that mean you shouldn’t see it? Heck no! I say you should…epsecially if you are a Depp/Burton fan!!
